VATICAN, the papal election board game that makes the electoral process clear. VATICAN is a 2 to 6 player board game with each player taking the role of a cardinal prominent enough to be considered a serious contender for the papacy. The process ends with an election. Like all elections, it brings together considerations of experience, popularity, and even chance. The events of the game help players achieve a greater understanding of how a pope is chosen. Even though every effort has been made to depict the actual process as closely as possible, Vatican is a game played in an evening and can only "simulate," not "re-create," the election of a pope.
VATICAN is a game that simulates the process by which men become pope. The game designer and publisher have taken great care that the facts are accurate and that the processes simulated are distillations from the recent history of papal elections. The game does not set out purposely to reflect the events of any particular election too closely.
The Objective of the Game
Each player pursues an ultimate goal of 100 (or more) Cardinal votes and with them, his election as pope. VATICAN assumes there are 150 voting cardinals with two-thirds (100 votes) required to win.
